1.    (a)  Without using Mathematical tables or calculators,

simplify:

Applying BODMAS where;

 

B= Bracket

O= of/ order

D= Division

M= Multiplication

A= Addition

S= Subtraction

So, we solve the mixed fractions in the bracket first by converting them to improper fraction,

 The L.C.M. of 3 and 4 is 12, So,  

We substitute this  into the original equation

The next to apply is the division rule so we have

 

We therefore convert the final answer back to mixed fraction which becomes
